Tamara Marks, Life and Health Coach / Domestic Violence Counselor

Making the transition to counseling coming from a medical background just made so much sense to me. I have always had a passion for helping others and a friend suggested that since I am so good at counseling and helping people that I should pursue something in the counseling field. Through studies and experience, I found I have a passion for counseling!

I’ve been able to facilitate domestic violence groups and sessions which has helped people not only heal from their bad situations, but many have thrived and gone on to have fulfilling relationships.  The changes that happen through this program can change the trajectory of their lives, as well as the lives of their future generations.  Being able to better prepare future generations help them improve their communication and relationship and avoid the cycle of violence has been very fulfilling for me.

As a 20 year Military Veteran, I find that I am still serving my community through my service with the Navy League of San Diego.  I serve in my church as the Nursery Leader.  I am also a Foster Mom for Chihuahua Rescue helping match precious dogs with the people that need a little one to love.  Through Rhombus Counseling I am able donate time to mentor new psychologists who are coming into our program. My vision for the future of my career is to continue mentoring facilitators and getting to see people grow.

My Self-Care is to enjoy my animals which includes horses, dogs, cat, and chickens.  I also enjoy walking, swimming, and time with my friends and family.

“I have always had a passion for helping others and a friend suggested I would be good in a counseling career. Through studies and experience, I have found that I have a passion for counseling!”

feleciaSQfield

Felecia O’Hara, LCSW

I have always had a desire to help others my entire life; especially, after going through a long period of significant loss. I made a conscious decision to make it count for something greater than the sum of this painful experience.. I divorced my husband after spending almost 25 years in an abusive relationship, my youngest son was killed shortly after moving to San Diego, my mom died of lung cancer, and my aunt died of breast cancer. Experiencing all this grief, pain and loss occurred in a two year period. I felt full of remorse and genuinely lost in the world, unsure of myself or what to do next, and not wanting to go on living. Previously, I had worked in big business as a Buyer so becoming a social worker was a complete career change. Yet, I've always been a champion for the underdog, willing to help others succeed.

One of the experiences I'm extremely proud of in my career is the work I've done in crisis intervention in both in-patient and out-patience settings. One of my success stories involved working with a client diagnosed with schizophrenia and substance abuse (commonly called dual diagnosis) while sleeping around having unprotected sex. I had the opportunity to help her get stabilized in the community, plugged into primary care, attending medical and psychiatric appointments regularly, taking her medications as prescribed, and connected with community resources for her overall wellbeing. I was able to help this client find a safe place to live while teaching her the essentials of healthier living and maintaining her basic necessities. These included cleanliness and personal hygiene, healthy life-style activities to stay busy, developing a routine to prevent idleness, and spending her money wisely in purchasing seasonal clothing and other basic necessities.

I've had the opportunity to serve college students while employed at San Diego City College in the mental health department. I've had the privilege of working with domestic violence survivors and helped them relocate out of abusive environments to safety and currently I facilitate a DV Men's group. I've worked with refugees and asylum seekers in their quest for a better life. And ultimately, I am a believer, an ordained Evangelist, and Sunday School Teacher. Most recently I volunteer at the Morris Cerullo Legacy Center in San Diego Mission Valley.

Some of my personal hobbies are riding my bicycle, swimming, and walking at Mission Bay. Being near the water and talking with God brings me peace. I enjoy the company of friends and engaging in deep, thoughtful, meaningful conversations and traveling to new places.

"I had a desire to help people my entire life. I decided to act on it, especially after going through a period of such loss."
